Open-air summer in Vienna

When the temperature in summer is high, there is nothing I like better than spending as much time as possible outdoors. Sometimes I feel like watching an old sci-fi film under the stars or listening to a reading of modern literature. With the wealth of open-air events on offer in Vienna, it is difficult to decide what should be on the programme first. That’s why you will find here a small but very fine selection of my favourite events for a successful summer in Vienna.

Celebrating in the open air

What comes to mind when you think of summer other than sunshine? Festivals, right! Because what would Vienna be like in summer without open-air concerts and cool after-work drinks in the open air? Above all the latter is possible in the coolest places in the city. My personal highlight is the Techno Café - worth a visit even just because of its unique location! A further fixed point for me is the pop festival at the end of July on Karlsplatz in Vienna. Especially the acts on the lake stage directly in front of the Charles Church are all pretty cool! Tip: it pays to come as early as possible, especially in the Techno Café. Otherwise you may have to queue a little bit longer. ;)

Culture in a special setting

Vienna once again lives up to its reputation as a city of culture this summer. Because my culture-loving heart beats faster at both the annual film festival in front of the City Hall on Rathausplatz (where you can also taste food from around the world at numerous food stalls), as well as at "Opera Live on the Square". While operas above all are shown live on the forecourt of the State Opera House (how could it be otherwise), every day is different at Rathausplatz. From musicals to jazz concerts to concert films by the Rolling Stones, everything is included. Especially exciting is the programme of the Original Sound Literature festival in the main courtyard of the Museumsquartier, where modern authors hold readings free of charge.

She is not only inspired by regular visits to the various farmers’ markets and regional producers, but also in her favourite Viennese coffee houses. And when the city gets a little bit too loud, then she off she goes out into the countryside with Ferdinand, her dog!
