Places with a difference in Austria's capital

16.03.2018

Many visitors to Vienna stay mainly in the inner districts, where the majority of the well-known sights - such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg or the Viennese Naschmarkt - can be found. It can however be well worthwhile to make a detour to the less touristy areas and to get to know the "other Vienna". Although these sides of the federal capital and its adjoining areas are less frequently immortalized on postcards, they also offer exciting culinary insider tips and places to go.

It is mostly business travellers who spend the night in business or event hotels and thus get to know the advantages of the outskirts of Vienna and the surrounding areas. I took a look at what the areas around the Mediaquarter Marx, the Wienerberg and the Pyramide in Vösendorf have to offer and came across some insider tips that are sometimes even surprising for long-time Viennese resident.

Mediaquarter Marx: an up-and-coming district

The Belvedere Palace, the Botanical Gardens or the Hundertwasser House - all these famous sights are located in the 3rd district. Less well explored is the area around the Mediaquarter Marx. But a visit pays off anyway.

Cultural and culinary highlights in the Mediaquarter

Sights worth seeing in the 3rd district

The Mediaquarter Marx is the largest media centre in Austria – the hustle and bustle of TV stations such as ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 and ATV, emerging restaurants and the first burial place of a world famous Austrian all lie very close to each other and give the district its very own charm.

Wienerberg: explore the southern edge of Vienna

Around 200,000 people live in Favoriten, a Viennese district that could not be more diverse. While there is a lot of activity around the Reumannplatz and you can enjoy yourself at the Therme Wien (thermal spa) in Oberlaa, the area around the Wienerberg is ideal for a bit of exercise.

Be active in Favoriten

Action in Vienna's most populated district

The Wienerberg is part of the 10th district and holds some treasures that are even unknown to the Viennese. Extensive walks, a round of golf and good bourgeois cuisine - all this can be experienced in the working class district of Favoriten if you are tired of classical sightseeing.

Vösendorf & Co.: Holiday feeling in the south

The huge Shopping City Süd has given Vösendorf a name far the borders of Austria. There is much more to explore around the shopping centre on the outskirts of Vienna - and water plays a very special role.

Summer tips on the outskirts of Vienna

Let's go south!

The largest subterranean lake on the continent, idyllic places in the heart of industrial centres and a bathing lake with plenty of action – above all in summer a visit to the city’s southern borders is well worthwhile.
