Highlights in and around Graz

… at the green heart of Austria

Ready, steady, go – to the greenest federal state of Austria! What should you definitely not miss out on during a stay in Graz? The Austria Trend Hotels have all the insider’s tips for you when it comes to diverse and family-friendly excursion destinations – away from the city centre as well!

Hotspots for your tour through the capital of Styria

You’re ready to head out onto an exploration tour? Then you should visit the Old Town of the Styrian capital. Atop the Castle Hill, the most well-known landmark of the city is located: the Grazer Uhrturm (a unique clock tower). From there, you’ll have a breath-taking view of a number of other sights and attractions like the Graz Cathedral and the Kunsthaus art museum.

Want to shop at the green capital? The best location for this is in the heart of the city centre surrounding the Herrengasse or at the Annenstraße. But the markets at the Kaiser-Josef-Platz and Lendplatz squares are well worth a visit, too. You need a bad weather alternative? The most well-known shopping centres are the Shopping City Seiersberg and the Murpark.

Excursion tips in Graz and the surrounding areas

Listen up, lovers of coffee and the arts: Directly at the Mur, you can find the artwork of the American artist Vito Acconci. Since 2003, when Graz was the cultural capital of Austria, the Murinsel connects architecture and art with the experience of water – in an extravagant way. Enjoy a nice cup of coffee and possibly the most unique view of the green capital.

Theatre aficionados feel right at home at the Graz Opera. The neo-baroque theatre building is the second biggest of its kind – right after the Vienna State Opera. It holds up to 1,400 people. Music theatre or ballet: let the most diverse performances enchant you in an ambiance full of splendour.

You’d rather visit Austria’s biggest karst cave and see the stalactites and stalagmites? That’s possible during your stay in Styria, too. The Lurgrotte Peggau is located only 20 kilometres to the north of the capital – and it’s a popular excursion destination year-round. Enjoy a typical Brettljause alongside award-winning wines in one of the many rustic taverns – and the view of the stunning scenery on your journey along the Südsteirische Weinstraße (Southern Styrian Wine Road).

The best locations in Graz for a family excursion

Arts and culture should not come up short during your stay either? Then, you should visit the children’s museum “Frida&Fred”. Different exhibitions as well as a laboratory and theatre to participate in are guaranteed to spark your children’s interest. The Next Liberty Graz offers theatre plays, theatre workshops and much more for its young audiences.

A trip to a fairytale land in the depths of the Castle Hill in Graz. A ride with the fairytale express leads you through the fairytale forest. A witch house and a robber’s cave are only two of many stops along the way. Always accompanied by quotes from famous fairytales, you and your loved ones are asked to actively participate. A special highlight – not just for fans of the Grimm Brothers.

A great alternative for all those who want to get out into nature: the WIKI Adventure Park. Located directly in the city and still right in the middle of a forest – look forward to an outdoor adventure at the Hilmteich in Graz. Master one of the seven courses with your family on a total of 8,000 square metres. A particular highlight is the black Flying Fox course with its aerial rope slides.

Coffee and cake taste best at a family café! The Martin Auer Familiencafé at the Tummelplatz square is a colourful café for people of all ages. The kids get to play and paint while Mum and Dad can enjoy some pastries or a hearty lunch. Convenient: the playroom of the Landesorganisation Kinderfreunde (national organisation “friends of children”) is right next door.
